Getting to Ha Long from Hanoi and Hai Phong

Most international itineraries approach Ha Long from Hanoi, but Hải Phòng, Cát Bi Airport and Vân Đồn Airport can also form part of the journey. The correct transport choice depends on the final kilometre: the cruise’s named terminal, hotel or meeting point.

Start in this order:

1. Obtain the precise port, terminal and check-in deadline.
2. Decide whether to arrive on sailing day or the previous day.
3. Choose a transfer that serves the correct endpoint.
4. Add time for pickup rounds, rest stops and finding the desk.

Hanoi to Ha Long

Operator or cruise transfer

An operator transfer is convenient when its pickup area and time fit your accommodation. Ask whether collection is at a specific hotel, a central meeting point or a sequence of stops. Confirm the return location too; it may differ from pickup. If you change vehicle, identify where and who remains responsible for the connection.

Intercity coach or limousine van

Independent road services offer more choice but may stop at an office, hotel zone or roadside point rather than your cruise terminal. Check the operator’s current boarding point, luggage allowance and Ha Long drop-off on the day you book. Arrange the final taxi or hotel transfer before relying on an arrival estimate.

Private car

A booked car provides the most control over pickup and final destination, especially for a group or early port check-in. Send the driver the operator’s map pin and Vietnamese terminal name—not only “Ha Long Bay.” Confirm the fare, tolls, waiting arrangement and what happens after a flight delay in writing.

Whichever option you choose, avoid the last plausible same-day service. A road delay becomes your responsibility when transport and cruise are separate bookings.

From Hai Phong or an airport

Do not assume the closest-looking airport is the simplest connection on your travel date. Compare the flights actually operating, arrival time, immigration or baggage time, ground transfer and cruise check-in cutoff.

• Nội Bài (Hanoi): often fits a wider Hanoi itinerary, but the airport is outside the city and is not the same starting point as an Old Quarter hotel transfer.
• Cát Bi (Hải Phòng): can be useful for Hải Phòng or Cát Bà-linked plans; verify the road or ferry sequence for your exact departure.
• Vân Đồn (Quảng Ninh): serves the province, but schedules and onward transport need checking for your date.

Find the actual harbour

Ha Long International Cruise Port identifies its terminal on the new Bãi Cháy coastal road on its official site; Quảng Ninh Tourism also published a detailed port-access guide in June 2026. The provincial government separately identifies the Tuần Châu International Passenger Port terminal in Tuần Châu ward. These are not interchangeable.

Products involving Lan Ha Bay or Cát Bà may use a Cat Ba pier, a Tuần Châu meeting point or a combined transfer. Ask the operator for:

• the full Vietnamese and English terminal names;
• a map pin and a photograph or name of the meeting desk;
• the operator’s port contact;
• the latest acceptable arrival time;
• instructions if your driver cannot enter the pickup area.

Compare the pin with your ticket and saved map. Do not direct a driver by the vessel’s name alone because the vessel can be assigned a berth later.

Build a safer itinerary

After the cruise, do not promise a flight or train connection from the brochure’s disembarkation time alone. Add time for the boat to receive clearance, passengers to disembark, luggage to emerge and the road transfer to begin.
